Your brakes are the one part of your bike you can't afford to ignore. Here's how to tell when it's time for a change โ before it costs you more than a repair bill.
1. A screeching or grinding sound when you brake
This is usually the clearest warning sign. A high-pitched screech means the pad's wear indicator is doing its job. A grinding sound means the pad is gone and metal is now touching metal โ stop riding and bring your bike in immediately.
2. The bike takes longer to stop
If you're pulling the brake lever further than usual, or your stopping distance has noticeably increased, your pads have thinned out and lost their grip.
3. Vibration or pulsing through the lever
This can mean the pads are worn unevenly or the brake disc has warped. Either way, it needs a look.
4. Visible wear
Check the pad through the caliper โ most pads have a minimum thickness of about 1-2mm. If you can barely see the pad material, it's time.
5. The bike pulls to one side when braking
This usually means one pad is more worn than the other, or there's an issue with the caliper itself.
Our advice
Don't wait for total brake failure. A brake pad replacement is one of the cheapest, fastest jobs we do โ and it's a lot less expensive than a brake disc replacement or an accident.
