Kitale's motorcycle parts market has both genuine and counterfeit parts on sale โ and it's not always obvious which is which. Here's what to watch for and why it matters.
The real cost of a "cheap" part
A counterfeit brake pad might cost half the price of a genuine one โ but it often wears out 3-4x faster, and in the worst cases, fails to stop the bike effectively when you need it most. The same goes for chains that snap early, batteries that die within weeks, and engine oil that doesn't actually protect your engine.
How to spot counterfeit parts
- Packaging with blurry logos, spelling mistakes, or missing batch numbers
- A price that seems too good to be true compared to other sellers
- No brand markings on the part itself (genuine OEM parts are usually stamped or embossed)
- A seller who can't tell you where the part was sourced from
Why we only stock genuine parts
At Mawarev, every part we fit โ from spark plugs to brake discs to wiring harnesses โ is sourced from trusted suppliers. It costs slightly more upfront, but it means your bike runs better for longer, and you're not back in the workshop (or worse, stranded on the road) a few weeks later.
Our advice
If a part is significantly cheaper than what you're used to paying, ask questions before you buy. A trustworthy fundi or parts dealer should be happy to explain where a part comes from.
